The small town of Limenas (also called Thassos) is the capital and main port of Thassos. It counts about 2.500 inhabitants and it is located on the northern coast of the island, on the site of the ancient city of Thassos and has most of the population. It is the administrative and commercial centre of the island.
Limenas has a modern and an oldest part. The old quarter is the most beautiful part of the city, presenting archaeological interest because it has various ruins scattered all around: Agora, the sanctuary of Zeus, Poseidon, Dionysus and Artemis, and a small amphitheater.
The old port is very picturesque as is the ancient marketplace.
